Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted

National Recycling Week
Monday 7 to Sunday 13 November 2022

This year, National Recycling Week explores the idea that Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted. Topics include:

  • how to give resources a second life,
  • how to reduce the need for newly produced resources, and of course,
  • recycling.

Planet Ark

Established in 1996, National Recycling Week (NRW) is one of Planet Ark’s flagship campaigns and every year aims to educate and empower people to do the right thing when they’re at the bin.

“We need to rethink our waste and see it as a resource that can be turned into new products. By keeping these materials in circulation for as long as possible, this benefits the environment by reducing the extraction of virgin materials for new products, as well as the water and energy it takes to make them.”
~ Planet Ark

To lend a helping hand, Planet Ark is bringing attention to simple, easy, actionable tips that will help you keep valuable materials out of landfills.

  • Check It Before You Chuck It
Check the packaging for Australasian Recycling Label. It tells you which bit goes in which bin. It’s an easy way to understand how to recycle right.
  • Drop It Off
Discover drop-off locations where you can recycle tricky items such as mobile phones or printer cartridges.
  • Compost Food Scraps
Composting your food scraps can reduce the number of materials in your household rubbish bin by up to 40% and produces nutrients for your garden.
  • Put It In Loose
Keep recyclable out of bags! Otherwise, they won’t be sorted correctly and will end up in landfill.
  • Leave It Out
Recyclables in plastic bags, soft plastics, food waste, crockery, nappies, clothes/fabric, polystyrene, CDs/DVDs/Videos, window/drink glass, batteries and mobile phones don’t belong in the bin. They cause contamination and end up in landfill.
  • Buy Better
Buy second-hand, buy in bulk, and buy products made from recycled materials.
