Meet Rodrigo Silva from NoGi Hub in Port Macquarie

We’d love for you to meet Rodrigo Silva, a passionate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, local dad, and the owner of NoGi Hub in Port Macquarie. Recently, we caught up with Rodrigo and his partner Marcia to ask them a few questions about Port Macquarie life and his local business.

Hi Rodrigo 👋 You moved to the Greater Port Macquarie a year ago, what made you make that decision?

Originally from Brazil, we had always looked for a quieter place to live than Sydney. Honestly, I first had an intuition about Port Macquarie before we even got here! Once we did, we fell in love and decided to move… BUT things changed and we got pregnant, so our plans were postponed.

Much later, we visited Port Macquarie with Clara, my daughter, and the fire was reignited.

We also connected with a few friends who live here and then we couldn’t resist it anymore! This is definitely the best place to raise Clara, and I know I can contribute to this community with Jiu-Jitsu, especially teaching Self-Defence to the youth.

What is it about Greater Port Macquarie that your family loves most?

We love the abundance of natural beauty, the beaches, and all the many walks we can do without even going too far! The people here are very warm and welcoming too, which makes Port a hidden gem.

What is your family’s favourite place to go exploring in Greater Port Macquarie?

We were given a family pass to Sea Acres Rainforest when we first arrived, so we are always there! There is always something new to see, and the volunteers are super friendly, telling us about the curiosities of the plants and fauna!

What is your ideal family staycation in Greater Port Macquarie?

We love to be home, look after the veggie garden, and our backyard! And when we are feeling a bit more adventurous, Crescent Head is our go-to!

Which beach in Greater Port Macquarie is your family's favourite?

Lighthouse Beach is the closest and meets all our needs: nice ocean and sand for the girls and surf for me!

Which park or playground do your kids love to visit the most in Greater Port Macquarie?

Clara loves Blair Reserve Playground. It is nice and close to us, and we can also do the nice walk there too if we feel like having quiet time.

Where is your favourite place to eat out with kids in Greater Port Macquarie?

Our favourite is Chop ‘n Chill. Then we have ice cream next door at Baskin Robbins and go for a walk around the breakwall!

Are you able to give us The Inside Scoop on your local business and how you got started?

I’ve been involved in the Jiu-Jitsu world for over 20 years. It all started in Brazil when a good friend of mine invited me to train at his club. After a few years of training in different clubs, I started training at Behring Jiu-Jitsu Team.

Back then, I was actually a lawyer, post-graduated in Business Law, and Jiu-Jitsu was a big passion of mine, particularly self-defence, which was the main focus of my training.

When I moved to Sydney, I kept training, started teaching, and embodied Jiu-Jitsu as a lifestyle. Since then, I was focused on opening my own place and last year our plans came true. We decided to start our family business in Port Macquarie, and here we are trying to contribute to the health and fitness of this community.

What do you love most about what you do?

There are many things that I love about it. I’m passionate about Jiu-Jitsu. Probably the feeling of helping people to improve their confidence and self-esteem.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a powerful tool that helps people to feel empowered.

What are your tips for balancing work, life, family and hobbies?

I try to have everything in balance; I know it is quite difficult to achieve. Luckily, my work and hobbies are related. When I’m at the club, teaching or training, I have a great time. My family is my everything; we love to spend time together with the little one and we are very supportive of each other. We decided to live in the present, not the past or future. It helps you to live in balance. By the way, turning your mobile off and spending some time in nature helps too.

For people wanting to know more about your work or connect with you online, where can they find you?
