Meet Jane Whitfield from Drawn to Art Port Macquarie

We’d love for you to meet Jane Whitfield, a talented local artist, mum of two boys, and the owner of Drawn to Art in Port Macquarie. Recently, we caught up with Jane to ask her a few questions about her life in Port Macquarie and her local business.

Hi Jane 👋 You moved to the Greater Port Macquarie a few years back, what made you make that decision?

In 2005, my husband Haydn and I moved to Port Macquarie from the busyness of Sydney; our parents had both retired up here.

We instantly loved the coastal, country town and felt it was the perfect place to live and start a family. Four years later, our eldest son Abe was born, then Jake followed two years later.

What is it about Greater Port Macquarie that your family loves most?

As a family, we do a lot of activities together. We love the close access to our local beaches, swimming, and surfing. Our sons play a lot of cricket, so we enjoy the close proximity to the cricket fields, state forests, and national parks.

So, everything we love is pretty much here!

What is your family’s favourite place to go exploring in Greater Port Macquarie?

We never get sick of exploring places. I love drives out to Comboyne or National Parks. It’s always nice to do day trips to mix up the scenery and explore new places that aren’t too far from home.

What is your ideal family staycation in Greater Port Macquarie?

Staycations would be Hat Head or South West Rocks.

Which beach in Greater Port Macquarie is your family’s favourite?

Lighthouse Beach is our local go-to. The boys like swimming there, it’s close to home, and we can take our dogs there for a walk (south of Watonga Rocks) on the long stretch of beach. We always bump into friends, which is always nice as well.

Which park or playground do your kids love to visit the most in Greater Port Macquarie?

My boys, now 11 and 14, have outgrown parks and playgrounds, but when we find the time, they do enjoy visiting Port Macquarie Skate Park at Town Beach Reserve.

Where is your favourite place to eat out with kids in Greater Port Macquarie?

We love Japanese food. Sushiko is the best, always fresh and delicious.

Are you able to give us The Inside Scoop on your local business and how you got started?

In 2004, I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with distinction) from UWS, Penrith NSW.

After completing my degree, I managed a contemporary art gallery in Sydney before moving up to Port.

In 2005, I started an after-school art program at many local . It was then my business, Drawn to Art, was established. I also conducted workshops and adult art classes from my home studios. As the business expanded, I have since relocated to the industrial area to a bigger studio at Merrigal Road, Port Macquarie.

At Drawn to Art, we offer an array of diverse art classes for all ages and abilities. Whether it be a single class during school holidays, Adult and Child Term Classes, 1/1 Specialized workshops by appointment only, or Art Parties, you can be sure to find an art class that meets your or your child’s needs.

What do you love most about what you do?

Drawn to Art is a vibrant art studio that has been described by many as “everyone’s happy place”. It’s a space where students from all different walks of life come together to be creative. We share artistic interests and experiment with an amazing range of art materials and mediums.

It’s all about growing and developing our skills and knowledge while learning who we are and how we see the world around us. That’s what I love about my job.

I love how uninhibited children’s art is; it’s bold, colorful, and free. Art is such an important part of a child’s development. Art enables confidence, self-expression, and imagination. Art is life!

What are your tips for balancing work, life, family and hobbies?

I don’t know if I can offer any tips regarding finding the right balance with work, life, and family, as life is a constant juggle for our busy family. There are always a million things to think about and do.

While personally, I relish being busy and ambitious, continually challenging myself and striving for more. The fusion of art and life holds deep significance for me, seamlessly integrating into every facet of my being.

At home, my family often sees me drawing while dinner is on. Still, we always cherish our quality family time, where devices are turned off, allowing us to simply enjoy each other’s company.

For people wanting to know more about your work or connect with you online, where can they find you?
